Milestone 8 $820 to go

Projected finish, example plan August 2029

Example: $6,380 saved toward $36,000, at $850 a month. Projected finish: August 2029.

The full cost of buying, in one number

Most savings tools track a number you pick, and most calculators stop at the down payment. Hill Wallet adds all three costs. On a $260,000 home with 10 percent down, that's $26,000, plus $7,800 in closing costs and $2,200 to move in: $36,000.

You type in your own figures. Not sure of your closing costs? The guide below lists the usual ones.

An emergency cushion comes first

Before anything counts toward the house, Hill Wallet fills an emergency cushion (the app calls it base camp) of one to six months of your expenses. It's kept separate from the $36,000 you need to buy. On the example plan that's three months of $2,600, or $7,800.

When a $650 car repair comes out of the cushion, your house savings stay where they were, and your next deposits refill the cushion first.

Your total, split into monthly milestones

Hill Wallet splits your total into equal milestones, about one a month, so you only think about the next one. The app and texts call them switchbacks.

On the example plan, $36,000 splits into forty milestones of $900. Yours depends on your total and what you save.

You reach each one when your saved total passes it, so a light month and a big month even out. Tap any step below to see its total.

The month you'll reach your goal

Hill Wallet divides what's left by your average over the last three months and shows the month you'll get there. On the example plan, $29,620 is left and they've been saving $850 a month, so the date is August 2029.

Every deposit you log updates it. Skip a month and it moves later; save more and it moves up. It's a projection from your own numbers, not a promise.

Climb Alerts are account notices, never ads. A reminder on the day you pick, a note when a switchback clears, your sign in code, a renewal notice. Nothing else, ever.
